Something hit my foot. Something slippery, and I gasped and tossed myself into Mike’s arms. Well, more like moved as fast as the water would let me until I reached him and held him tightly, threatening to take us both down.

“Something touched me,” I shouted. What the heck was I doing out here in the water, in the middle of the ocean, where unknown predators like sharks were lurking just underneath the surface?

“Relax. Let’s just get our masks on as Kai instructed us and see for ourselves.”

With me in his arms, he dipped his face under the surface and looked around for a minute. He popped his head up again. “Relax. It’s a green turtle.”

“A turtle? Really?” Okay, so those weren’t so scary. They might actually be kind of cute.

“Ready to try again?”

I nodded and followed Kai’s earlier instruction as I got my mask in place.

“Wait. You have a little hair…” Mike gently tugged a strand of hair that must have been plastered to my cheek and pulled it back, then moved another piece from my forehead. It was strangely intimate having him touch my face like this—almost as intimate as the fact I was still nestled in Mike’s arms.

Yikes. I moved my legs beneath me again and treaded water as I pushed the mask on tightly.

He nodded his head. “Ettsh gou,” he said through his mouthpiece, which I interpreted as let’s go. He ducked his head beneath the surface and swam out, kicking his feet. I glanced over my shoulder where Kai was waiting in the boat about fifty feet away.

Well, I could either wait here until a great white shark decided to make me its breakfast or I could join him. Safety in numbers and all that.

The water was clear and a bright vibrant turquoise that made it feel like I was watching everything through Technicolor. It only took me a few seconds for my eyes to adjust.

Oh. My. Gosh. It was incredible down here, so pure and bright and—

Was that the turtle? Oh, he was cute! Remembering Kai’s instructions, I didn’t try to pursue or touch the turtle as he swam underneath me. I kept moving and nearly clapped when I saw another one.

I’d caught up to Mike now, and we were side by side as we watched the turtles dive and roll along the bottom of the ocean floor. We saw a group of brilliant yellow fish next, some black ones that looked like ninjas, striped black-and-white fish that looked like they’d sprung from prison, and so many others I lost track of them and the time we were there.

And through it all, I was constantly aware of Mike’s presence, his body skimming in the water next to mine, his fingers reaching out to touch my hand when he wanted to point something out. It was reassuring as much as it was exhilarating.

The bottom of the reef was getting farther and farther away from us as we followed a school of gold-colored fish when something darker swam right through the middle of them.
